World Extreme Rock Crawling Australian Finals 5-6 August 2006
I thought I’d just give you an update from Round 4 and the finals for the year, had a really great weekend, we competed all the stages with good scores, Saturday stages saw us drive stage A1 first and as the second car for the day and had a good clean run until we tried the bonus line, as it looked the easier of the two lines to take after taking almost 8 minutes to clear the bonus only to end up hooking the back wheel on a tree and not finishing the course but we managed to get 2 progress gates and finish with 38 this broke of one of the shock mounts, after some quick repairs it was of to A2 after the repairs we lined up at the start gate to find that we had no front drive after looking at the course and thinking we would not finish it anyway due to no one else driving all day I decided to drive buggy the way it was, making it through the first gate we got hung up on the floor pan and that’s where we finished with a 39. After the length recovery of the rock it was into the pits to find out what the problem was, after pulling of the front hub to find out it was a broken axel it was a quick and simple repair and back into the racing with 10 minutes of breakdown time left. At A3 we went through the stage like a well oiled machine and finished the course with a 13. A4 saw us drive the first section extremely well but to roll over at the finish gate with 10 seconds to go trying to push through to finish bouncing over a rock and on to our side and finished with a 36, after being recovered by the Mog this put us in fourth place and with 126 points for the day, the roll also cause another shock mount to break and put a hole in a shock absorber so it was back to the pits to repair it over night, the old buggy is starting to show some signs of the wear and tear of a years racing.
Sunday saw the sun warm things up a bit, with now only 3 stages and the shoot out ahead for the day we need to continue to finish the courses with good clean runs Stage B1 again was a hard run and we got hung up on the floor pan again and finish with a 38 and stage B2 being a tough one we manage to finish the course and get a 7, B3 ended with a great score of 9 and giving use 54 and getting us back up to 3rd place.
This all put us in a good position for the shoot out and being the second pro modified to run gave us the chance to watch the others make there way through. With only 8 points Jamie Hughes having to do the bonus line to catch 3rd place, he gave it a go and rolled heavily, With us up on the course we knew we had to do well and so the pressure was on, we cleared the first rock drop of, we than progressed through the with only have to finish the course, we backed up to have a look at the bonus line, but couldn’t get the buggy on the right line and decided to take the easy option and finished to course, followed by Sean and Tim in the Suzuki buggy, they took the easier line and tried the 1st bonus but failed, but managed to finish the course. Dave Camp only need to finish to secure his win and also took the easy line, With Team TJM 1st, Team BF Goodrich 2nd and OnRock Racing 3rd for the event, this also left us in the same order for the series standing and the top 2 teams heading for the USA in November and OnRock Racing heading for Superior All Terrain Challenge at Mud Bulls and Music as our next event.
I have to thank our sponsors this years WE Rock Series Mickey Thompson Tires, Bay Tyre and Mechanical, ATeam Mobile Mechanical and Driveline Services for your great support throughout the year and hope we can continue to work together in the future.
